Fence and deck planning starts here-before your ideas turn into headaches. You don’t have to build today… but let’s make sure you don’t cry later.
You’ve got screenshots saved, a few Pinterest tabs open, and a growing suspicion that your HOA is going to make this… interesting.
But you’re not quite ready to commit – and that’s totally fine.
Fence and Deck Planning – What to Know Before You Build
At Trinity Fence & Deck, we work with plenty of homeowners who are in the “just browsing” stage. This guide is for you. Whether you’re a planner, a procrastinator, or somewhere in between, here’s everything you need to feel good about your future outdoor upgrade – even if you’re still sleeping on it for now.

What’s Your Ideal Timeline?
You don’t need to know the exact date – but think about when you want to be enjoying that new fence or deck. Spring barbecues? Graduation parties? Summer shade? These rough estimates help you plan backward:
Wood Fence
- Lead Time: 1–3 weeks
- Build Time: 2–3 days
Composite Deck
- Lead Time: 3–5 weeks
- Build Time: 1–2 weeks
Pergola or Shade Structure
- Lead Time: 3–5 weeks
- Build Time: 1–2 weeks
Trinity Tip: Want a deck by spring? Start chatting in winter. Want it by summer? Don’t wait until June when everyone else does.
What’s Your Budget… or Best Guess?
You don’t need to have it all figured out – but even a rough range helps us guide you toward materials, layouts, and features that fit.
Need to do it in phases? We can plan for that too – one project at a time.
Do a Quick Property Reality Check
Before your estimate, ask yourself:
- Are you in an HOA? (And do they enjoy paperwork?)
- Have you checked your property lines?
- Do you know if there are slopes, drainage issues, or buried lines?
If you’re not sure – don’t worry. We’re used to navigating the “surprise” stuff.
What’s Your Backyard Vibe?
Pinterest boards are great, but answering these helps even more:
- Wood or composite?
- Vertical or horizontal lines?
- Clean and modern, or rustic and homey?
- Hosting space or quiet zone?
- Need it to match a pet, pool, or picky spouse?
You can even take our “What’s Your Outdoor Style?” quiz for a little fun (and solid inspo).
What Questions Will You Ask the Estimator?
Don’t worry – we’re not quizzing you. But these are smart ones to jot down:
- What’s included in the estimate?
- What’s not included?
- Do you help with HOA forms and permits?
- How long will it really take?
- What happens if the weather goes rogue?
- Who’s my point of contact during the job?
We’ll go over all of this with you – we just like it when you come in ready to talk shop.
When You’re Ready, We’re Ready
You don’t need to be ready today. But if you think you’re getting close, we’ve created a Customer Planning Guide to help you get there.
It’s got budget tips, timeline tools, material cheat sheets, and some checklists you can scribble on during your next coffee break. No pressure, just prep.
