One storm and a wobbly fence could become a neighborhood event. Fence storm preparation isn’t just smart-it’s essential when Texas weather turns wild.
Smart Fence Storm Preparation for Texas Weather
Storm season in the Austin area brings sudden wind, rain, and humidity that feels like walking into a dog’s breath. But for your fence? It’s worse. Between gusts, rot, and ground movement, it doesn’t take much for an unprepared fence to shift, split, or end up in your neighbor’s pool.
Let’s talk about how to reinforce your fence before the storms show up.
Start at the Posts – Always
Your fence is only as strong as what holds it up. Signs your posts need attention:
- Leaning or shifting at the base
- Water pooling near concrete footings
- Rot or softness at ground level
- Cracking concrete or missing gravel fill
Steel posts (like we use at Trinity) dramatically improve wind resistance and lifespan. If your posts are wood and older than your teenager, it’s time to take a closer look.
Tighten It All Up
Even a solid fence can become a kite with a few loose pieces. Be sure to:
- Re-secure pickets and rails with rust-resistant fasteners
- Replace warped boards – they catch wind more easily
- Add bracing to long panels (especially in wide open yards)
- Inspect gates and latches – loose hardware can rip panels out
Need reinforcements or hardware upgrades? Austin Fasteners & Supply has all the storm-worthy screws and galvanized gear to tighten things up properly.
Drainage Makes All the Difference
Standing water = soggy soil = shifting posts. Simple steps that help:
- Grade the ground so water flows away from your fence line
- Add crushed granite or gravel channels along problem areas
- Trim id planting directly against fence bases unless you’re okay with rot
- Trim overhanging branches that can turn into fence-breakers during storms
