Smart questions now = fewer headaches later. Pinterest fence and deck mistakes may look pretty online, but they can lead to costly regrets in the real world.
Let’s be honest – booking an estimate for your fence or deck project can feel a little like speed dating with a clipboard. There’s a lot of smiling, some polite nodding, and before you know it, you’re halfway through planning a major project without asking the big stuff.
We’ve met plenty of homeowners who picked the lowest bidder… only to find out halfway through the job that their “contractor” wasn’t licensed, insured, or particularly interested in returning their phone calls. So let’s skip the heartbreak.
If you’re scheduling an estimate this month, take this no-fluff checklist with you. It’s part peace-of-mind, part power move – and it keeps your budget, your timeline, and your expectations right where they belong.
10 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Fence or Deck Company
- Are you insured? It’s the most important question – and it should be answered without hesitation.
- Who handles the permits and HOA approvals? Don’t assume anything. In Central Texas, neighborhoods like Sun City and Berry Creek have specific rules you’ll want your builder to know before they break ground.
- What kind of materials do you recommend – and why? If someone pitches you the cheapest wood without explaining weather performance, it’s a red flag.
- What’s your estimated project timeline? Get a realistic start-to-finish window, not just a vague “we’ll get to it soon.”
- Will I have a dedicated project manager or point of contact? There’s nothing worse than getting bounced around during construction.
- What happens if weather delays the job? Rain and cold snaps happen. Make sure you understand how they’ll handle it.
- What’s included in the estimate – and what’s not? Beware of the “basic install” trap. Ask about hardware, cleanup, haul-away, and disposal.
- Do you offer any warranty on labor or materials? Even quality builds can have minor issues. A good company stands behind their work.
- Can I see photos or reviews from past projects? If they hesitate to show receipts (literally), run.
- How soon do you book out? In January, you might have your pick of spots. Come March? Not so much.
Bonus Tip from the Trinity Team:
Don’t be afraid to ask these questions more than once or take notes during the walkthrough. Any company that’s legit – like us 😉 – will respect the fact that you’re doing your homework.
