Summer’s here-perfect time for power washing fences and decks before the fun begins.
Nothing Says Summer Like Blasting Off Grime
There’s something weirdly satisfying about a good power wash. Wood goes from gray to golden, dirt vanishes like magic, and your fence suddenly looks ten years younger. But if you go full throttle without a plan? You might end up pressure-etching your initials into the deck. (Yes, we’ve seen it.)
Here’s how to clean things up without causing a mess – or a repair bill.
Fence First: Make That Grain Shine Again
Wood fences soak up everything — pollen, mildew, dust, wasps, regret. Before you re-stain or paint, a good wash resets the surface:
✔️ Do:
- Use a wide fan spray tip to avoid cutting into the wood
- Start at low pressure (500–800 PSI) for cedar or pine
- Keep the nozzle at least 12″ away from the surface
- Work in even passes — overlap for consistent results
❌ Don’t:
- Don’t use bleach – it can damage nearby landscaping
- Don’t linger too long in one spot (unless you like tiger stripes)
- Don’t wash in full sun – the water dries too fast and leaves residue
Want a natural pre-treatment? Mix up a solution of water, vinegar, and a touch of dish soap. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse off before power washing.
Deck Duty: Power Washing Without Damage
Decks can be trickier, especially older ones. Too much pressure and you’ll raise the grain or gouge the boards.
Best Practices:
- Use a deck cleaner first to loosen grime
- Set the washer to 1,000–1,200 PSI for most wood surfaces
- Wash with the grain, not against it
- Rinse thoroughly to avoid residue (and the dreaded “clean streak” effect)
Planning to re-stain or seal? Wait at least 24–48 hours for the wood to dry completely – longer if it’s humid. And if your deck is composite, check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Some materials don’t love high pressure.
Not Sure You Want to DIY It?
We get it. Power washing sounds fun until you’re 4 hours in and your arms are vibrating like you just played three sets of drums. There are plenty of Austin-area rental options (like Sunbelt Rentals) if you’re game to do it yourself – or we can connect you with pros who can clean it without shredding your boards.
Either way, clean wood = a fresher look, better stain adhesion, and fewer regrets.
Bonus Touch: Make It Decked Out
Once it’s clean, finish the look with loungewear from our Decked Out Collection – because fresh wood deserves fresh vibes.
